AskingCanadians year one in review

by Pat Prunskus.

Taking a page from Amber Bartlett’s recent blog post, this month marks my first anniversary at AskingCanadians. As a classic rock enthusiast, hockey historian and just plain old-fashioned narcissistic sentimentalist, I often look at the past with appreciation.

Here are some highlights of the past year:

  • October 1, 2012 – Day one. AskingCanadians and the Delvinia side immediately make me feel welcome. Amber Bartlett has a Tim Horton’s double-double waiting for me at my desk and Grace Kim has a miniature hockey net and stick alongside it. Great to be working with them again, along with Angela, Raj, Frank, Ken and Roy.
  • October 11, 2012 – Set company record for fastest bid-turned-project. Forever grateful for that first one coming through the door – you know who you are!
  • October 14, 2012 – Front Row – Rush Concert. Not work-related but worth mentioning.
  • October 18, 2012 – Attend a Delvinia pitch meeting and get my first glimpse of the legendary presentation performance of Steve Mast and our digital strategy approach.
  • October 19, 2012 – Second annual DIG Insights party.
  • November 27, 2012 – Environics Analytics’ User Conference. Some great speakers. Biggest personal takeaway: the Raptors have a Lithuanian Heritage Night.
  • December 5, 2012 – MRIA 2013 Holiday Party. Great table, decent turnout and great outfits.
  • December 6, 2012 – Delvinia Holiday Party – Wisely take Friday off.
  • December 31, 2012 – AskingCanadians finishes strong with 101 per cent revenue growth over 2011.
  • January 19, 2013 – NHL ends the lockout and the season begins.
  • January 31, 2013 – Net Gain 7.0 Toronto. Adam Froman, aided by a pinch of salty language, talks about dashboards.
  • February 2013 – Creation of a Client-Specific Custom Panel (like I’m going to say whom for…) While new territory for AskingCanadians, the recruitment goes smoothly and it quickly exceeds the expectations of its purpose.
  • February to May 2013 – Personal milestone – 7 new clients now doing business with AskingCanadians.
  • May 8, 2013 – ESOMAR Best of Canada. Three speakers and a great piece on ad measurement.
  • May 14, 2013 – Concerned colleagues begin a week-long endeavor to comfort me based on my stunned and disappointed facial expression after the Game 7 Leaf loss to the Bruins.
  • May 28, 2013 – The entire office takes the afternoon to walk two blocks south and attend an afternoon Blue Jays game.
  • June 2 to June 4 – MRIA National Conference 2013 in Niagara Falls. AskingCanadians/Delvinia takes home the 2013 Excellence Behind the Scenes Award for our work with The Weather Network and user-centric dashboards.
  • August 15, 2013 – After months of preparation and particular diligence by Susan O’Neill, Delvinia’s 15th Cuban-themed anniversary party begins. “Hotel Delvinia” opens its doors for one amazing night.
  • August 16, 2013 – AskingCanadians hits the same number of projects it obtained in the whole of 2012.
  • September 9, 2013 – Personal milestone – 100th AskingCanadians project landed. Also happens to be the 77th project of the year. 77 is my hockey number. Coincidence?
  • September 20, 2013 – Third Annual DIG Insights party. Rapidly becoming my favourite time of year.
  • September 28, 2013 – AskingCanadians & Delvinia participate in the SickKids Great Camp Adventure and hit our fundraising goals.

Quite honestly, this has been the most productive and enjoyable year of my professional career. Something, I’ve mentioned to Adam Froman after a few Old Fashioned cocktails. It is usually received with a shaking head and an accusation of being a softie or something more salty than that. But that’s who I am and I think it’s always important to recognize the beauty of the journey in the moment.

On top of that, we’ve got a headstrong and flexible team here. It’s allowed many of our clients to bring their data collection experience to us and that’s worth appreciating and getting sentimental about.
